While the kissing scene was still awkward for Martin, his biggest worry is clearly his performance. A girl probably could have told me as much, but, I don’t know, there seems to be a certain deference and creditability. The second kiss – once I pull away and I go back in – I remember asking one of the guys on the crew named David, ‘Did I sell that well enough? Like did that look like I was into him enough?’ Not that it takes a gay guy to know that. And then a guy grabs me and swings me around and kisses me, and at first I pull back, like who’s kissing me? And then I see him and I’m like, ‘Oh my god – it’s you!’ And then I go back in for the kiss and it’s more passionate and it’s real and there’s a catharsis and everybody cheers. There’s a scene where I kiss a guy – the only scene where I have a real kiss – and I’m on a dance floor and these girls pull me in to dance with them in my family’s bar in the motel, and they pull me onto the dance and a girl plants a kiss on me and then I push away from her.

Still, that sounds pretty different from the time he talked to us about filming that scene: There’s room to hear gay panic humor or just awkwardness for Martin taking on his first dramatic role. His heavy use of Altoids could be a joke about feeling self-conscious instead trying to wipe away the memory of kissing a man. Since he hasn’t had many acting roles yet, the awkwardness could just as easily be about filming a kissing scene in general. Now, in fairness to Martin, he doesn’t clearly play it as a gay panic joke. Not only does the director offer to ease the tension by casting Martin’s girlfriend for the opposite-sex kiss, but he describes the experience as "weird" and ended up devouring plenty of mints. And it was weird cause it was like girlfriend, push her away, guy, oh yeah I want to kiss you, and then, okay girlfriend again. Martin: And then, like eight takes later - we keep doing it over and over again. O’Brien:The weirdness of doing this in front of your girlfriend. And then I have to go really make out with the guy in front of her. I kiss my girlfriend, I have to push push her away. We can cast your girlfriend if you want….So the day comes, and I’m kind of dreading it but I’m like my girlfriend will be there so that’s cool. (at this point O’Neal moves away from Martin) Ang, the director said, listen, in that scene you have to kiss a girl first, and then you push her away, and then you kiss the guy.

Martin: There’s a scene in the movie where I have to kiss a guy, where I have to make out with this guy. As Martin tells it on The Tonight Show, filming the scene was an awkward experience, partly because his girlfriend had a role in it. After jokingly caressing Martin, fellow guest Shaquille O’Neal pretends to be repulsed by Martin as he talks about filming a scene where where he kisses another guy. Martin’s Tonight Show appearance has become a topic of discussion for gays after Andy Towle called out the gay panic humor in the segment (and we mentioned in the briefs yesterday). Friday night he appeared on The Tonight Show, but based on web searches, it appears the only other time he has discussed the movie and his gay role at length was in an interview with us from February. So far, we haven’t seen Demetri Martin do a lot of promotion for his upcoming movie Taking Woodstock.
